Re-stringing the Car

Our guitar player was pretty chill, wailing slow-jam blues on his cream Telecaster. But one night he partied too hard after a gig, with a bunch of “wild and crazy” guys at the bar. On his way home, he got pulled over, and ended up losing his license, which nixed his pizza-delivery job and meant he had to bum rides to gigs. His new party-friends heard about his crappy situation and felt bad, so they offered him a job at their jewelry factory, in Fall River. The guitar man was handy, and knew the jewelry biz, so he took the deal. They picked him up in the morning, bought coffee, and paid a nice wage. It was all about Bro Code for them, one for all and all for one. Work hard and play hard. But after the second week he quit the new job, telling us why… “Their car broke down, up on the Braga Bridge. It was a snapped gas-pedal cable, so I did a quick-fix, jury-rigging a string to the accelerator. We controlled the gas, from inside the car, with the string. The driver did the brakes and steered. And one of the passengers pulled the string, to control the speed.” We said, “That’s pretty ingenious. What was the problem?” “Well,” he lamented. “They had so much fun, with the string, they’ve decided to keep driving that way!”
